A Festive and Insightful Night at AmDoc’s Annual Gala: Embracing Diversity in American Storytelling

Today, we live in a world overflowing with diverse narratives and cultural intricacies, where the power of storytelling stands as a unifying force. Last month, we had the pleasure of attending the 2023 American Documentary Annual Gala, which showcased the compelling role of documentary film in connecting various backgrounds through their night of "Embracing Diversity in American Storytelling." The Gala explored the critical question of ‘Who gets to tell stories that reach the public?’. Attendees were invited to delve into this question, fostering a deeper understanding of the variety of narratives that shape our world and the role independent storytellers play.

We were pleased to celebrate among friends, both old and new, during the night. Some of our highlighted reunions included:

  • Carol Colmenares, Director of Outreach and Education, Dicapta
  • Barbara Ghammashi, Member of Dicapta Advisory Group
  • Asad Muhammad, VP of Impact & Engagement Strategy, POV
  • Set Hernandez, Director and Producer, Unseen

We are thrilled to work closely alongside one of American Documentary’s partners, POV, television's longest-running showcase for independent nonfiction films. With the support of the Department of Education, we are proud to make POV’s documentary filmmaking more accessible through our Audio Description services. After an inspiring night, we can’t wait to continue making television, films, and documentaries more accessible to those with sensory disabilities.
