 Dr. Juanita RodriguezDoctor Juanita Rodriguez is presenting the results of our projects "Captions and Video Description: Educational Tools for Hispanic Children with Disabilities," and "DAD: A collaborative platform to encourage learning through creativity and dialogue" at Edulearn18 this week. She will be sharing the project's results with academics from around the world during the Special Education session.

Dr. Rodríguez is an educator and advisor for educational projects for the deaf and hard of hearing and deaf-blind. She was dean of the School of Education at the University of Puerto Rico - Rio Piedras from 2012 to 2014 and has been a special education professor in the Graduate School Department of Education at the University of Puerto Rico since 1986. She leads the research component of our project "Captions and Video Description: Educational Tools for Hispanic Children with Disabilities," which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education (OSEP grant number H327C15009). 

The objective of our research was to explore the benefits of using media with captions and video description from Discovery en la Escuela to enhance vocabulary of Hispanic students who are deaf/hard of hearing and those who are blind/visually impaired. 

During our research, we concluded that the use of captions helped students who are deaf/hard of hearing to acquire new vocabulary and improve their reading skills. We drew a similar conclusion for the use of video description to help children who are blind or visually impaired.  In addition, for students with residual hearing, the combination of captions and video description provides them with visual images of what they are reading.

The project "DAD: A collaborative platform to encourage learning through creativity and dialogue" ) was funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR grant number 90BI0027-01-00).  The goal of our project was to provide children with visual impairment  access to visual images while improving their literacy skills through a collaborative process with their sighted peers. 

During the evaluation of the proof of concept of our platform we concluded that: 

  • Captions and video descriptions help students with sensory disabilities to overcome the challenges that the sensory deprivation imposes.
  • Audiovisual content with CC and DV is accessible to all learners, regardless of their learning style or diversity. 
  • Training in accessibility for all is a must. 
  • Teachers need to know about the availability of resources  to be confident with tools.   
  • The practical implementation of strategies to provide an ideal inclusive environment is still a challenge for everybody.  

Edulearn is an annual International Conference on Education and New Learning Technologies organized by the International Academy of Technology, Education and Development (IATED). It provides a platform to discuss the latest developments in "teaching and learning methodologies, educational projects and innovations and new technologies applied to Education and Research."  More than 800 experts from 80 different countries attend Edulearn.
