After the fall of Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s leader from 1987 to 2017, the military ensured the population that they will have free elections for their next leader. It is against this background of a newborn democracy that Camilla Nielson’s “President” takes place.
The film follows the 40-year-old Nelson Chamisa, a presidential candidate that hopes to win the 2018 election in a country that faces severe economic crises, food scarcity an ever-increasing wave of political violence. Through meetings, rallies, and violent background, Nielson follows Chamisa’s desperate struggle for democracy.
